Transformative Roundtable Dialogue on Halal Economy in Nigeria


The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, (IBBUL) Nigeria and the Africa Islamic Economic Foundation, (AFRIEF) Tamale, Ghana, are organising the 1st Transformative Roundtable Dialogue on Halal Economy in Nigeria, under the Distinguished Patronage of His Excellency, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (GCFR), former President, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The theme of the event, which is scheduled to take place on the 13th of March, 2017, at the University Auditorium, Lapai is: Mapping the Future of Halal (Ethical) Economy in Nigeria.

The main purpose of the Roundtable Dialogue is to create better awareness and understanding among policy makers, leaders and stakeholders of the public and private sectors, the academic and professional communities in Nigeria about the Halal Economy and its potentials. In addition, this high level meeting is designed to, within the framework of national priorities, meet three core objectives: (a) consensus-building, by providing a platform for intergovernmental and private sector driven debates and inquiry; (b) policy-oriented analysis, by identifying key issues underlying the Halal economy and the dynamics of Halal industries in world markets; and (c) technical cooperation, by helping the various Governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to articulate a development strategy that can optimize the economic potential of the Halal (Ethical) Economy to stimulate private investment, attract new technologies, promote entrepreneurship and set the basis for a an export-led strategy for the emerging Halal industries in Nigeria.

The event therefore, provides a platform for key stakeholders, policymakers, business leaders, academics, researchers, students, practitioners and other leaders of society from within the Federal Republic of  Nigeria to map the sectors and sub-sectors of the Halal economy in order to understand what exists, where the value chain for each is concentrated, what possibilities exist to support and expand the varying sectors, as well as the emerging and informal, in order to develop and maximize Nigeria’s potential for tapping into the USD$3 trillion Global Halal economy.

According to the organisers, the event will cover topics such as: Faith-Based Economy and Social Responsibility: Islamic And Christian Perspectives; Halal Economy: The New Global Market and Economic Growth Paradigm; Islamic Banking and Finance in Nigeria: Prospects for Growth; Halal Agro-Food Parks; Roadmap to Making Nigeria a Hub for Halal Meat Export; OIC Standards: General Guidelines on the Halal Food Industry; Let us Build Cities; Not Houses. (Promoting Human Smart Cities Development in Nigeria).

The decision to jointly organise this important event follows the courtesy visit which the leadership of the Africa Islamic Economic Foundation paid the Vice Chancellor of IBBUL, on the 20th December, 2016, during which the two institutions agreed to jointly pursue academic and professional activities in the fields of Islamic finance and Economics in Nigeria.
